There Was God

There was a day when I realized that no one would save me but God
And that I had to stand, to pick myself up every time that I could
That no one else would bring me an umbrella in the rain
And that if I say nothing, they won't realize I'm in pain

There was a time when I realized that no one would stay except God
And that I needed to turn to him every chance that I could
That everyone else would leave my life someday
It'll be years before I'll find the one who'll stay

There was a time when I realized that He was all I ever needed
That He'd never abandon me, leave me, or become jaded
He'd always hold my heart with a gentle and kind hand
And never let it fall onto life's rocks and sand

There was a day when I realized I was more than what they said
I am more than kisses and thin-ness and boots and thread
He is my Father and He sees through each and every mask
And if I push Him away, then He will only pull me right back

There was a moment when I realized only He could see my soul
And only He could see it and love me for all of me in full
I'm sure that's why us mortals are blind to others' minds
And I think we're scared of whatever we might find

But not Him! Oh no. He loves each of us just the same.
No matter what things we've done, if we're blind or deaf or lame
There was a day I realized that only this was true
And it was not long after, when I finally saw you
