Today Was Veteran's Day

Today was Veteran's Day and what did I do?
Scrolled through Facebook posts and little notes saying simply "thank you"
There were coupons and freebies for those who had fought
But any words outside the Internet, hear, I did not
What is Veteran's Day when the world simply goes on?
When we disregard the battles that have already been won?
When there's midterms and homework and birthdays to share
Time to honor our veterans? Why, there's none to spare
At least not so implicitly as "thank yous" and pictures and well-wishes
Instead when I came home, I for once did the dishes!
And I payed back a debt that I owed to my friend
From a group date we planned just this last weekend
I smiled at strangers as I walked down the street
And noticed the small details that make life oh so sweet
Because isn't this honor, to live life so well?
That's what they fought for, that's why they fell
So we could smile at strangers and pay back our debts
So we could enjoy a life that's sometimes so intense
I may not have had a spare minute today
Between serving others, taking tests, there was no play
To honor our veterans in so many words I couldn't spare
No "thank you" or "you're remembered" passed my lips to the air
But I made the world a little bit brighter today
I made some people smile, and I think that makes it okay
And then I wrote this poem to make sure that they all knew
You were not forgotten; I remembered you, tis true
I honored you on this very special day
I lived my life in memory, in a very certain way
We won't forget your losses, or that they never grew old
We won't forget your stories. And forever they'll be told
Hopefully we'll live our lives a little bit more deep
Hopefully we can honor you as in the ground you sleep
So notice all the falling leaves and the crispness in the air
Notice and remember and wish that they were there
