Okay, storytime. I really love typewriter poems- I look them up all the time. Mostly on Pinterest. And today I wrote this one. It's not the best, definitely not up to par with the ones that I like the most, but I think it's nice. This one happened when I was looking through old pictures on my phone and found one from tech theatre, where we'd had to do age makeup (that was a great class). It inspired this poem. Storytime over. The end. :)

The Composer
keep your eyes open when you sing
lest you lose yourself in the music
swept away by the tune
it flows so strongly against the soul
sweeping violins and soaring flutes
notes jumping like silver fish
and the bass of it all
rocks in the streambed
look around you and see the scene
and do not close your eyes
for if the music claims you
as it threatens so often to do
then you are lost to me and I to you
flickering clarinet, gentle harp
I plead with them to leave you be
but you are gone, gone
as your voice soars above it all
rains down its beauty on all who hear
keep your eyes open when you listen
your voice sweeps me away
to strange worlds, oceans deep and wide
islands with palaces built of sound
ringing with beauty in every form
dancing through the hallways
with the conductor's baton
I cannot bear to hear you sing
it sweeps us both away
apart and closer together in exhilaration
sweet and joyful yet painful
for it must end
you must always sing, and I will listen
your voice is the light
the guide to my path
I walk down trails of eighth notes
half notes, sforzando, forte, pianissimo
crescendo and then fall again
leading me through a dark forest with music
someday I'll meet you at the end
and perhaps we shall sing together
lest you lose yourself in the music
swept away by the tune
it flows so strongly against the soul
sweeping violins and soaring flutes
notes jumping like silver fish
and the bass of it all
rocks in the streambed
look around you and see the scene
and do not close your eyes
for if the music claims you
as it threatens so often to do
then you are lost to me and I to you
flickering clarinet, gentle harp

Humpty-Dumpty-Sherlock
Sherlock climbed on the hospital wall
Moriarty told him to fall
Mrs Hudson, John Watson
And all Lestrade's men
Couldn't put Sherlock together again*

*Didn't need to put Sherlock together again...
Moriarty told him to fall
Mrs Hudson, John Watson
And all Lestrade's men
Couldn't put Sherlock together again*
*Didn't need to put Sherlock together again...

A Poem With A Strange Origin
The moon shall rise
but not give light
for it has lost the sun
the love of its life
but not give light
for it has lost the sun
the love of its life
A Humorous Night
This key lime tart
That I'm eating right now
Is so good to eat that
I feel like a cow
Lil' bite size tarts
With whipped cream on top
They taste so delicious
That I can't stop.....
....wait....
....what do you mean they're gone?!
That I'm eating right now
Is so good to eat that
I feel like a cow
Lil' bite size tarts
With whipped cream on top
They taste so delicious
That I can't stop.....
....wait....
....what do you mean they're gone?!

You'll Never Read This
If a poem isn't read is it dead?
Or does it just sit and sob instead?
If a poem isn't read does it cry?
Or does it shrug metaphorical shoulders and sigh?
No! A poem is not a person, silly
I think your head is willy-nilly
Poems cannot die or sigh
They cannot bow their heads and cry
If a poem isn't read, does it rot?
Does it decompose into gross whatnot?
If a poem isn't read does it break?
Like dropped glass, for heaven's sake!
No! A poem is an idea, not an item
You cannot decompose or dry them
Poems cannot shatter or rot
That right there is crazy talk you've got!
If a poem is read does it sing?
Does its voice make the air ring?
If a poem is read does it party all night?
Does it get drunk and start a fight?
No! Poems aren't people (And even if they were
This one's Mormon so that wouldn't occur)
Poems don't sing without someone's voice
So right now I'll give you a choice
Read it aloud! At the top of your lungs.
Climb up a ladder and read it from the rungs
Tell it to everyone, spread it around
So that this poem can have a sound
Or ignore it again, like all the rest
The funny thing is, this is a test
To see if a poem not read must die
To see if a poem read can then fly
If a poem isn't read, did it ever exist?
Or was it just the alphabet shaking its fist?
If a poem isn't read does it fade away?
Like an old book from a long ago day

Today Was Veteran's Day
Today was Veteran's Day and what did I do?
Scrolled through Facebook posts and little notes saying simply "thank you"
There were coupons and freebies for those who had fought
But any words outside the Internet, hear, I did not
What is Veteran's Day when the world simply goes on?
When we disregard the battles that have already been won?
When there's midterms and homework and birthdays to share
Time to honor our veterans? Why, there's none to spare
At least not so implicitly as "thank yous" and pictures and well-wishes
Instead when I came home, I for once did the dishes!
And I payed back a debt that I owed to my friend
From a group date we planned just this last weekend
I smiled at strangers as I walked down the street
And noticed the small details that make life oh so sweet
Because isn't this honor, to live life so well?
That's what they fought for, that's why they fell
So we could smile at strangers and pay back our debts
So we could enjoy a life that's sometimes so intense
I may not have had a spare minute today
Between serving others, taking tests, there was no play
To honor our veterans in so many words I couldn't spare
No "thank you" or "you're remembered" passed my lips to the air
But I made the world a little bit brighter today
I made some people smile, and I think that makes it okay
And then I wrote this poem to make sure that they all knew
You were not forgotten; I remembered you, tis true
I honored you on this very special day
I lived my life in memory, in a very certain way
We won't forget your losses, or that they never grew old
We won't forget your stories. And forever they'll be told
Hopefully we'll live our lives a little bit more deep
Hopefully we can honor you as in the ground you sleep
So notice all the falling leaves and the crispness in the air
Notice and remember and wish that they were there

Statue
I raise my arms up to the sky, exultant
Glorify in the beauty of the day and night
For me there is no other way
My life is to stay and honor
The earth the wind the rain the sky
And no one will break my upraised hands
Nothing can change my attitude of praise

It Seems
It seems lately I've been facing down my future, right in front of me, nose to nose, and we just glare at each other.
It seems lately that my decisions have been upended beneath me as if I was a glass and sat on the table they were made of
It seems lately that my biggest fear is showing how unsure I really am, how much I don't have it all figured out. Out of comedy and tragedy, I smile on the outside but within I'm dying
It seems lately that I may have to give up something extremely precious and I'm not sure I have the strength to do it. It feels like Sisyphus and his boulder- endlessly repeating, endlessly difficult.
It seems lately I've been facing down my future. Red boxing gloves, and circling, with me on the floor, blood streaming from my nose
It seems lately my future has been frightening me.
It seems lately that my decisions have been upended beneath me as if I was a glass and sat on the table they were made of

Writing
I turned on the computer
This morning, and it sighed
Gentle, like the wind at night
When it's had enough
I yawned
Up late the night before
Probably again tonight
Yet here I am
It's 5:30 and
I'm writing
Fingers tapping away
At the 26 keys
My pajamas shroud me
An XL shirt hanging
Off of S/M shoulders
And sweatpants, too comfy
I yawn again
And it sounds to me
Just like a sigh
A breath from the earth
Like the wind at night
When it's had enough
This morning, and it sighed
Gentle, like the wind at night
When it's had enough
I yawned
Up late the night before
Probably again tonight
Yet here I am
It's 5:30 and

Beauty
I feel beautiful when I'm alone
Or home
Home being a place with the people that do not make me feel ugly
And by their refusal to acknowledge my ugliness
They make me think I must in some way be beautiful
I feel beautiful
When I'm not thinking about it
And then I am, suddenly, in full realization of the beauty I am a part of
It is not marred and I am in it, so I must be, have to be, somewhat beautiful
I feel beautiful when I read
The pages opening worlds to me
This is my magic, and magic is beautiful, so I must be beautiful
I feel beautiful when I see his eyes
When he looks at me in a way that makes me feel like he sees my soul
In the way of another who is beautiful
I feel beautiful when I look for other's beauty
Inevitably found in their eyes
They glow with a depth that cannot be foreign to me
Because I am like them
With eyes bright like flames or stars
Humanity is beautiful
I am human
So I am beautiful
